Diagnosis and treatment

What is urethritis?

Urethritis is the inflammation of the urethra. This can result from infectious or non-infectious condition. Most individuals complain of having:

  • dysuria (pain during passing urine)

  • discharge from the urethra (pus like discharge which may be mucoid or purulent)

Several organisms can cause infectious urethritis. Nisseria gonorrhoea and Chlamydia trachomatis has been established as the clinically important infectious causes of urethritis.

To minimise transmission and infection, men are advise to abstain from sexual intercourse until they have their partner adequately treated. Men are also advised to be tested for HIV and syphilis.

Woman tend to present with cervicitis which is frequently asymptomatic. Some individuals have abdomen vaginal discharge and inter-menstrual vaginal bleeding.

Gonococcal infection
